12. LET ME SEND YOU PAPER MAIL…
In seven days I could write a postcard to you personally from my field office on Kelleys Island, using blue ink & stamps wetted with meltwater from the post-glacial Great Lakes formed ~20,000 years ago during the Last Glacial Maximum (I'm siphoning up that water in Lake Erie about 8 miles south of Canada).
As I said earlier, I've already begun sending postcards to the archive for my project at the Nevada Museum of Art on scouting trips I took to Kelleys Island earlier this year. And as long as you order before I board the ferry next week, you will start receiving hand-scribbled (but legible) postcards addressed to you.
These first postcards will be sent using vintage postage featuring illustrations of the St. Lawrence Seaway and the Great Lakes. Here's a picture of the stamps I'll use on your postcards (Scott #2091 for the philologically inclined):
Over the next two years, you'll receive 24 hand-written postcards outlining my activity on Kelleys Island, mailed direct to your door. As I explained in my last email this is a kind of artist book hand-written to you personally. This is an experiment in commemorating an otherwise private aspect of my practice, and I'm excited to share some of the details with you.
Purchasing this artist book directly supports my practice by paying for one round-trip passage to the island. Your sponsorship truly makes this possible.
I want to be clear that you don't need to buy this in order to continue to receive my newsletters, I will still report back on my experiences through the website and email, but I wanted to offer an opportunity to own a tangible piece of the record of my practice for those of you who are able to support me in this way.
Also, please note: Once next Thursday rolls around, I'll stop taking orders for this edition of the artist book, so if you are intending to order this, please do it sooner rather than later so that I can start sending you postcards from the beginning. Thank you to those of you who have already ordered!
Thank you for your continued support.
