Cobbled Boulders is a tableau of clay stones made through a meditative practice of hammering and shaping. Drawing on a lifetime’s exposure to stone through finding, handling, sorting, measuring, and habitual attention to the peculiar ways it becomes round, flat, angular, or irregular, I use my embodied familiarity with stone to produce contours and textures that are plausible and subtle. That accumulated knowledge makes it possible to wrought the appearance of geological form from a material that has never undergone the ravages of geological time. The practice extends from an early apprenticeship to an Italian ornamental blacksmith, where I learned to understand hammer blows as differentiated actions, varying in force, direction, rhythm, and contact, each capable of producing a different consequence. The hammer’s conventional role in reducing stone through breaking and removal becomes constructive here. Individual stones are made, accumulated, and cobbled into a tableau of boulders, each one the result of repeated physical attention and an attempt to translate an understanding of natural form through the body and into clay.
