The Roundest Possible Stone begins with random scoops of graded crushed limestone. Nine separate samples are assembled into nine round forms, with every fragment in each scoop required to become part of its corresponding stone. Each successive piece must touch another before being fixed in place with hot-melt adhesive, so the form emerges through a continuous sequence of local decisions governed by the material already in place. I work each sample toward the roundest possible stone that can be produced from that particular random scoop of fragments. The standardized aggregate is therefore subjected to a process of accumulation, constraint, and trial-and-error adjustment to produce an irregular approximation of roundness. Each composite stone records the statistical character of its original sample alongside the decisions required to reconcile that randomness into a coherent form.
