Wooden Boulder begins with more than 2,000 standardized cypress cubes, each cut, surfaced, and stamped with my maker’s mark before being assembled into a checkerboard block. The block is reductively carved into the form of an idealized boulder without geological texture. The individual cubes remain present throughout the body, their grain orientations accumulating into a surface that initially reads as continuous and, at closer range, resolves into a field of discrete pieces. After the carving is complete, I return to the surface with a chisel, cutting parallel bars into the boulder according to the notation of Zangrius’s 1600 heraldic system of tinctures, with their orientation standing in for the colors of my shipping crates. The carved surface therefore carries several registers of making at once: the standardized dimensions of the lumber, the individual marks of fabrication, the accumulated geometry of the composite block, the reductive carving that produces the boulder, and the final heraldic inscription.
